The Paramedic Woodworker
The Paramedic Woodworker
I am a Paramedic by profession. I have been since 1980. During that time I have always been involved in woodworking. I guess my Dad got me interested in this when I was only 10 years old. We never had a lot of money and my parents wanted to give my brother and I a place we could call ours. There were 9 of us living in the house and my brother and I shared a room. So, my dad went to the lumber store (and yes.. back then they really had lumber stores) and picked up some plywood and 2x6s, and 2x4s. There were no DIY shows on TV and the internet was something in the realm of SciFi. I was always and to this day baffled how my father figured out how to build beds and cabinets complete with drawers and a desk under the window.
Three years ago I retired from EMS. I still maintain my paramedic license and am very active in teaching. I decided to strike out into woodworking full time. After all I had hundreds of projects under my belt. I started filming my builds to be put on YouTube. I was excited about my progress while I was deep diving into education about how to edit videos...(that is way harder than it looks... still have not posted a single video.) Then on the night of April 19, 2019 I heard a 'Popping" noise outside. My dog (Samson) and I went to investigate. My shop, my refuge was on fire. I thank God that no one was hurt and the fire did not spread to the house. Every tool and screw and machine that I had been collecting for 30 years was either smoke damaged or water damaged and was ruined.
With the help of Farm Bureau Insurance, a substantial amount of savings, and about 6 months, some great sub contractors, family and a constant amount of work on my part, I have what I consider to be my perfect shop.
Typically I make shop toys and custom cabinets for family and friends. I make small items such as bird houses, bird feeders, squirrel feeders, small boxes, and Christmas decor. I have recently started making charcuterie and cutting boards.
I create pieces you can enjoy for years to come. If you ever encounter a design flaw or craftsmanship issue, I will fix or replace the piece–you only pay shipping. I'm also always available to help you you maintain the look of your wood.
